ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine serum total nitrite, direct nitrite and nitrate levels in preeclamptic patients.Material and Method: Twenty one patients with preeclampsia and 27 normotensive women who had 32 and higher gestational weeks were included to the study. Fasting blood samples were withdrawn into evacuated heparinized tubes from the antecubital vein. Serum total nitrite, direct nitrite and nitrate levels were determined spectrophotometrically by using Griess reaction. Results: The preeclamptic group serum nitrate levels was found lower than control group (25.06 ±2.02, 31.84 ±2.31, p< 0.05), but there was no difference at the serum total nitrite and direct nitrite levels between two groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that the decrease of maternal blood nitrate levels may play a significant role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.
