ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ) developed by Brooks-Gunn and Ruble (1980) in Turkey. Material and Methods: This is a methodological study. Written consent was obtained from the owner of the scale, the institution and oral consent was obtained from students. The study sample was composed of 534 female students at Akdeniz University. The data were collected using the 33-item MAQ. The MAQ have five factors. The factors and the number of items are: 1) menstruation as a debilitating event (12 items), 2) menstruation as a bothersome event (6 items), 3) menstruation as a natural event (5 items), 4) anticipation and prediction of the onset of menstruation (5 items), and 5) denial of any effects of menstruation (7 items). The MAQ is a likert type scale and has seven rating scales. The internal consistency coefficient of the original scale was changed between .95 and.97. Percentage, item to total score correlation, Cronbach alpha coefficient, test-retest and Varimax Rotation Factor Analysis methods were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The scale was translated into Turkish and re-translated into English by specialists. For the content validity, opinions of seven experts were obtained and the scores of the experts found to be consistent with each other (W: .190, p= .084). The test-retest reliability coefficients were found to be statistically significant (p=.000). The internal consistency reliability coefficient was 0.79 for the total MAQ and varied between 0.44 and 0.73 for the subscales. As a result of the item analysis, five items correlation coefficients were found below .20. Further analysis showed that excluding these items did not have any significant effect on internal consistency reliability coefficient of MAQ' and were decided to be kept in the scale. According to confirmatory factor analysis, the structure of Turkish version of MAQ was found in great resemblance with the original MAQ except placement of the subscales. While three items took part in different subscales, two items with factor loadings rated below .40 were excluded from the scale. The item number of Turkish version of MAQ has gone down to 31. Conclusion: In this study the MAQ was found to be a valid and reliable tool for measuring Turkish university students attitudes about menstruation. It is recommended that in future studies the MAQ be administered in groups with different gender and sociodemographic characteristics to test its validity and reliability in these groups.
