ABSTRACT
The prevalence of microorganisms in the lower genital tract in 200 postmenarchal adolescent girls, aged 13-17 years, was assessed. Cases with an abnormal vaginal discharge or cervical or vaginal infection were excluded. Samples from the posterior fornix of the vagina were transmitted to the laboratory and incubated aerobically and anaerobically. Sexually active patients had significantly more vaginal Enterococcus, E.coli, U.urealyticum, G.vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, N. Gonorrhoaea and anaerobs (p<0.05). It is important to define the microbial flora of the lower genital tract in adolescent girls in order to understand its role in the pathogenesis of acute salpingitis.
