ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of gestational diabetes at the obstetrics and gynecology department of Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital. Material and Methods: All pregnant women admitted for routine pregnancy follow-up between April 2011 and May 2013 were included in the study. In order that The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey can establish a national strategy on diagnosis and treatment of gestational diabetes, it has been emphasized that single-stage diagnostic test and traditional two-stage diagnostic test are required to be evaluated together for a few years. Hence, each patient received a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test between 24 to 28 weeks of gestation for the diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes. Maternal age, number of previous pregnancies, parity, weight and family history of diabetes were recorded. Results: Gestational diabetes prevalence of 1042 patients was 8,4% (88 patients). Mean maternal age was 27±4,2 (16-47) years. Mean parity was 1,3±1,2 (0-8); 406 patients (38,9%) were nulliparous, 291 were primiparous (27,9%) and 345 (33,2%) were multiparous. The body mass index of gestational diabetes patients before pregnancy was 28.1±3.3 kg/m2. Conclusion: 75 g oral glucose tolerance test applied according to the suggestions of The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey indicates that the gestational diabetes prevalence was 8.4% respectively.
