ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the difference of bone mineral density in 87 early postmenopausal women regarding to combined-type oral contraceptive use.Material-Method: Healthy postmenopausal women, who admitted to our clinic between January 1998 and December 2001 with menopausal age < 5 years, and to whom hormone replacement therapy was not given were included in the study. Vertebral and femoral bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Results: There was a positive correlation between femoral neck bone mineral density and combined type oral contraceptive use (p = 0.05). It was determined that this affect was more pronounced in women who used oral contraceptive over 24 months (p = 0.02).Conclusion: In this study, it was found a positive relation between long-term use of combined-type oral contraceptive and bone mineral density. The positive effect of combined-type oral contraceptives on bone mineral density may be respected as long-term advantages, along the protective effects on endometrium and ovarian cancer.
