ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the type and frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in first or early second trimester abortions. Material and Methods: Thirty-nine patients from whom conseptuses were karyotyped at the time spontaneous abortion at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Uludag University Hospital were included in the study. The relationship between the presence of chromosomal abnormalities and the studied parameters were evaluated by use of Fishers exact test. Results: Chromosomal abnormalities were identified in 11 of 39 patients, 9 with aneuploidies, and 2 with structural abnormalities. The most frequent abnormality was trisomy in the first and early second trimester abortions. Although the genetic abnormalities were detected more frequently after age 35, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Genetic abnormalities have an important role in the etiology of first and second trimester abortions and trisomies are the most frequent chromosome abnormalities.
